Food is our common ground - The Jumping Table by Gastronaut

I was extremely excited and honoured when David from The Gastronaut Diary invited me to the recent “Jumping Table” event. I read and got to know about this makan club through David’s blog when he posted their wonderful dining experience at Red Star Restaurant cooked by Masterchefs Sin Leong and Hooi Kok Wai. I was so very fascinated by the classic high-end Cantonese dishes from yesteryears (which David described as the golden 60s) recreated by the 2 masterchefs and wished I were part of the extraordinary gastronomical experience.

“The Jumping Table” is an epicurean club that focuses on such dining experiences which are specially planned and truly one-of-a-kind. Each event is unique and seats are limited to ensure quality. So, you could imagine my excitement when David dropped me an email invitation to join him and his like-minded friends last Saturday for a traditional Malay Wedding feast cooked by retired Chef Arni who used to run a well-known eatery at Far East Plaza, Scotts Road. Who in the right epicurean frame of mind would turn down such a dining invitation? I would not mind rescheduling all my appointments just to attend this wedding kenduri and to meet the Gastronaut himself! :D

Australia Trip 2012 Part XIII - Sorell Fruit Farm, Tasmania

Tasmania's cool climate gives extra flavour to its berry fruits and cherries. On our way to Port Arthur from Hobart, we stopped by and spent a couple hours at Sorell Fruit Farm which offers a wide variety of these temperate fruits.

Sous Vide Pork Chop with Mushroom Risotto and Asparagus Bouquet

Once upon a time, I hardly cooked pork chop at home as it always turned out dry and tough. With the sous vide machine, this is no longer a problem in this household. Last Saturday, I made this tender and delish sous vide pork chop for our dinner. Just as good was the bacon-wrapped asparagus. The mushroom risotto provided the carbs and extra protein.

Kerbside Gourmet - Gourmet Food Truck with a Social Vision

A lot of my blogger friends know Luan, the Extra Virgin Chef. The very first time I read her blog and her story, I was so very impressed with this lady who gave up her 20-year high-flying corporate career as a communications practitioner to learn to cook?! With great determination and passion, she worked as a kitchen intern in 2 restaurants and in between the 2 stints, enrolled and completed a course with At-Sunrice Global Chef Academy. A truly inspirational story.

Although we visited and left comments on each other's blog, exchanged emails and whatsapp messages, arranged to meet up for some foodie event, I had never met Luan in person until today.

Australia Trip 2012 Part XII - Grandvewe Cheese, Tasmania

While touring the Huon Trial, south of Hobart, we stopped by Grandvewe Cheeses, a small family run boutique organic sheep cheesery, to let the kids had the chance to get up close and personal with the sheeps in the farm and witnessed the sheep milking demonstration while we adults got to sample the different sheep cheese and admired the picture perfect view from the cafe and tasting area over lush green paddocks to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and Bruny Island.

I was ransacking the fridge, searching for inspirations on what to make for our Sunday dinner, when the boneless chicken thighs caught my attention. Chicken thighs are one of our favourite ingredients   for they are budget-friendly and pack more flavour than other chicken parts such as breasts.

Tomato Mozzarella Salad

Fresh tomato and Mozzarella cheese have always been a perfect match to make a light and yet very delicious salad. The key to this Italian salad is the freshness of the ingredients. 

There are a few variations to this salad but you would never go wrong with fresh tomato, basil leaves and good Mozzarella. It would be perfect if you could get Burrata instead of Mozzarella. Accompanied with good extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt and fresh ground pepper and balsamic vinegar, this is a super easy and yet super appetizing cold salad to start your meal!

The light morning shower did not dampen our spirit as we hopped from stall to stall in the Salamanca weekend market. There were so many interesting items to see and buy from handicraft, books, fresh produce to food and wine. We had a great morning at the market and were all feeling hungry and wasted no time heading straight towards our lunch destination – Home Hill Winery.

Pan seared Foie Gras with Caramelized Apple Flambé au Cognac

If you like to pretend you are a Michelin star chef at home like me, this is an ideal dish for you. Foie gras is one of the most prized ingredients on this planet. The rich flavour and the smooth creamy texture of the fat liver is just so delicate and heavenly that I find it so very difficult to describe. Just imagine that it is better than sex!
