Mention Australia wine and one name will come into most people's mind, James Halliday - the wine writer, wine critic, wine judge and winemaker. Coldstream Hills Winery was founded by James himself in 1985. Since its first vintage, Coldstream Hills enjoys a fine reputation for outstanding wines, particularly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Still having the alcohol effect after the long and satisfying tasting at the Yarra Yerring, we did not stay too long at Coldstream Hills and were quite selective in what we wanted to taste. I was particularly impressed with their limited release Roslyn Vineyard Pinot Noir.
The grapes were sourced from a single Roslyn Vineyard in the Coal River region of Tasmania. Quite deeply coloured for a young Pinot, aromas are of pomegranate and dark berries. The wine displays a soft fruit middle palate but with enough firm tannins and fresh acidity on the finish to provide structure and length. Ideal and well worth to cellar for another 4-5 years.
I highly recommend you to get hold of one of these limited bottles.
Is it cheaper to get from such places or from duty free? I guess if you get from the latter, you do not get to try - if it's an unfamiliar wine and year.
ReplyDeleteNeither, Arthur. It's cheaper to get wine from the bottle shops especially during promotion.
DeleteCellar door will not give you the best price as they need to cover the tasting cost while my experience with duty free shop is that prices are marked up to offset the tax waiver.
K, thanks. Don't think we ever have promotions at our wine shops here...or correction, wine shop. Other than that, we have some tiny, little sections in the local supermarts - not much to choose from...and no promos, sorry. :(
