Ashley is turning 10 coming Tuesday and we celebrated her birthday earlier on Sunday as we would have the whole day for the preparation. We always let the birthday kid chooses his/her birthday dinner menu. Unlike her sister who had requested Daddy to cook a full Chinese dinner two weeks ago, Ashley prefers Daddy's western cooking.
Wife woke up early to bake the mini cupcakes and made the fondant flower cupcake toppers. The kids were very excited when they saw the fondant flowers and volunteered to help Mummy with the decorations.
As it was a bigger group, instead of serving the Smoked Salmon amuse-bouche in the shot glasses, I presented them in serving spoons without the crackers. This way, they still looked elegant and easier for the guests to eat. True enough, the starters were gone in minutes.
While the duck breasts were in the Sous Vide machine, I prepared a vegetable stew dish with brussel sprouts, carrots and baby potatoes. I know a lot of people out there think that brussel sprouts taste horrible but I assure you this was really good. I managed to serve the whole pot with the duck and all the plates were empty.
Ashley wanted both Creme Brulee and Bread and Butter Pudding but I gave her only one choice. To me, that was an easier choice. :)
Time flies and my baby girl is now 10.
It has been tiring and at times trying but a very fulfilling journey of parenthood for me. Sometimes, I find myself mourning the kids' slow exit from childhood and wish for them to grow up faster especially when they are not behaving or during times when I weigh my burden and responsibilities to raise them up.
But on the other hand, when I look at them every now and then, they are growing so fast and are so different from, say, just a few months ago and I miss the children they were; I want to hold on to the kids they are now. And just when I think I grasp who they are this second, they change again.
I just read an interesting quote from Facebook about parenthood: Days are long but Years are short. So very true!
For now, I just want to enjoy this special moment.
Ashley, Daddy is glad that you had enjoyed the dinner and Daddy wishes you a very Happy Birthday!
